Compliance Manager

This role would suit an experienced food safety or technical officer looking to flex their muscles by joining an exciting, rapidly growing, values-based, sustainable business blazing the way in the evolving ag-tech industry. The role will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to build upon our current food safety standards and establish the foundation for compliance and food safety structures in new sites as the business grows. In addition, this role provides the unique opportunity to work closely with Senior Leadership to build out the business’ sustainability compliance structure and procedures.

At this stage, we anticipate the Compliance Manager will spend 4 days per week ensuring and improving site food safety and H&S compliance. The remaining day per week will be spent documenting our sustainability compliance processes and building upon our sustainability ethos.

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

General Food Safety & Quality responsibilities:
Manage site food safety and quality standards, ensuring compliance at all levels of the business. Lead on external audits, including but not limited to BRC, M&S Select farms, Red Tractor and SEDEX. Regularly review food safety and quality protocols and recommend improvements. Work with Senior Management, Operations Manager, Grower and production team to implement improvements effectively and cohesively.

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

  • To take ownership of site compliance by ensuring all aspects of food safety, Quality Management Systems (Including HACCP) operate as required, and the company remains fully compliant with customer COP, HACCP, TACCP, VACCP and current legislation.
  • Management of the Quality Management System(QMS) to comply with BRC and Customer (M&S, Co-op, Sainsbury etc.) requirements and Standards.
  • Lead BRC and other third party audits that relate to food safety and compliance.
  • Conduct internal audits and close out any raised non-conformances, ensure the internal audit schedule is implemented against the QMS & the Customer Codes of Practices / Requirements.
  • Ensure the site is “audit ready” at all times.
  • Manage microbiological testing processes and matrix, track results and analyse the trends while making ongoing recommendations for improvements to production processes.
  • Create, maintain and review company policies, procedures, and risk assessment documentation.
  • Create and monitor the completion of due diligence production paperwork as needed and ensure that documents are being utilised accurately and reflect current processes and methodology.
  • Lead/support in Technical Investigations and Improvement initiatives (e.g. customer complaints, accidents and incidents) and ensure that necessary actions are taken and communicated to necessary stakeholders.
  • Attend regular Operations and Senior Management Meetings, and engage the teams in root cause analysis and continuous improvement in aspects of food safety or health and safety.
  • Work with other ZCF work streams, suppliers and clients to support compliance, reduce risk and effect change leading to continual improvement.
  • Escalate food safety concerns and non-compliance issues to Operations Manager in order to resolve effectively as a team.
  • Interface with retail and food services customers.
  • Work with ZCF account managers to ensure the product complies with customer-specific requirements.
  • Keep up to date on policy changes and proactively highlight where these will impact operations.
  • Lead our nutritional analysis and ensure we make justifiable claims on our packaging.

General Health & Safety responsibilities:

  • Manage the site Health & Safety.
  • Implementation and management of compliance standards and risk assessments.
  • Ensure all mandatory training is covered applicable at each staffing level (legionella awareness, Coshh, Manual handling, material handling, fire marshal training.
  • Ensure all mandatory H&S checks are completed to schedule.

General Sustainability Compliance responsibilities
These responsibilities will include reviewing current sustainability documents and working with Senior Leadership to build our Environmental Management System.

In addition, responsibilities will include:

  • Proactively identifying and suggesting improvements for sustainable improvements to business practices.
  • Keep up to date on advancements in the sustainability sector, and suggest methods of adoption.
  • Measure and maintain company’s sustainability performance and compliance record:
    • Carbon Emission accounting and Management.
    • B-Corporation certification.
  • Keeping up to dates with relevant changes in environmental legislation and initiatives including international legislation where applicable.
  • Lead and Conduct company Ethics audit.
  • Monitoring purchased materials, ingredients and so on are ethically or environmentally sourced.
  • Research new sustainable certification bodies and submit applications.
  • Assessing, analysing and collating environmental performance data and reporting information to internal staff, clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Measure and maintain company Community outreach.

General Sustainability Compliance responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience in a Compliance Management position, within the Fresh Produce sector (both low-care & high-care environments).
  • Knowledge of and confidence to work to achieve BRC, Red Tractor, and Customer 3rd-party Audits.
  • Experience leading internal and external audits with formal Auditing qualifications.
  • Familiar with M&S Food Safety & Select Farm standards.
  • HAACP and Food Safety Level 4.
  • Food Service and Retail customer exposure advantageous.
  • Comprehensive understanding and exposure to QMS, HACCP, VACCP, TACCP, GMP and KPI management.
  • Highly knowledgeable about HSE and due diligence.
  • Continuous improvement experience.
  • Passionate about sustainability, knowledgeable of up to date sustainability issues, particularly in the fresh produce and agricultural sector.
  • Demonstrated interest in making a positive impact in the world.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work at all levels.
  • Driven, energetic, and passionate about achieving results.
