Deputy Farm Manager

Reports to: Farm Manager
Location: Clapham, SW4 7TD
Employment type: Full-time, permanent
Working days: 2 week repeating pattern – Monday & Tuesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday week 1, Wednesday & Thursday week 2. Week 3 is week 1, etc.
Working hours: 7am to 5pm
Start date: June 2022

Company Profile

At Zero Carbon Farms, we grow microgreens and salad for major nationwide retailers and London’s wholesale market using hydroponic, controlled environment farming techniques. Our farm is located 33m beneath Clapham High Street in former WW2 air-raid shelters.

Role Profile

The Deputy Farm Manager will support the Farm Manager to lead the team to complete day to day farm and packing related tasks. In the event the Shift Manager isn’t on site, they will have responsibilities to ensure the success of our operations, including food safety checks, daily plan creation and achievement, and attend the weekly operations team meeting, alongside the Head of Operations.

Responsibilities will include:


  • Ensuring team members work safely on your shift, reporting hazards and putting in place appropriate measures when issues occur


  • When the Farm Manager is absent, they will step up to manage team attendance, including authorising holidays and completing return to works


They will support the Farm Manager to…

    • Ensure all necessary activities are completed to the right standard and records are fully completed
    • Report any crop issues to the Growing Manager
    • Report any order fulfilment issues to the Site Manager


They will support the Farm Manager to…

    • Ensure daily orders are packed correctly and despatched at the agreed time
    • Prepare orders and paperwork for the delivery drivers
    • Ensure production team resource is utilised effectively at all times

Continuous Improvement

    • Using spare shift resource to work proactively on improvement projects
    • Encouraging the team to suggest and execute improvement ideas

Candidate Profile

Ideally you will come from a food production/manufacturing background, but this role would be equally suitable for a candidate who has supervised restaurants, kitchens or similar.

You will be hard working, reliable, a strong motivator and a team player.

You will be excellent at communicating verbally, and comfortable with using basic computer programs – Google Docs, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel and emails.

You will have an eye for detail and process improvement & you will be willing to speak up to raise your ideas and to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers.

You will have experience in supervising small teams, be able to show leadership qualities, excel at motivating others and be someone who can be relied upon.
