Finance Manager

Reports to: CEO (Head of Sustainable Growth)
Location: Clapham Common and Waltham Cross

Company Profile & Role
Zero Carbon Farms, trading as Growing Underground (“GU” or the “Company”), is a branded fresh produce company that supplies the wholesale, retail and foodservice markets with salads and herbs. Utilising the latest technologies GU is growing products in highly optimised controlled environments.

GU is seeking an enthusiastic Finance Manager who is passionate about sustainability and the food industry. The role will suit a candidate who is flexible, has a desire to work in a high-pressured environment and can grow with the business as it moves into scaling and growth.

The Finance Manager is responsible for the accounting operations of the Company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Company reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with accepted accounting principles.

Specific Responsibilities


  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies, procedures and control framework
  • Take ownership of key service provider relationships
  • Manage the core daily/weekly/monthly cycles
  • Identify and deliver ongoing process improvement of core operating cycles


  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Process payroll in a timely manner, maintaining compliance with all statutory requirements for PAYE, NIC, and the Company’s Pension scheme
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions


  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of Company operations
  • Build, calculate, and maintain financial and operating metrics
  • Coordinate the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide for a system of management cost and sales reports
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, for capital investments, pricing decisions, cost savings, contract negotiations, cap-ex vs op-ex decisions and profit improvement
  • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Future cost and revenue modelling


  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
  • Comply with local & national governmental reporting requirements and tax filings

Skills & Experience Required for the Role
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, reliable, and persistent with an interest in sustainability and food. The candidate will be a natural team player who is also comfortable taking initiative. Other essential qualities include:

  • Chartered Accountant or equivalent, with sufficient post qualification experience
  • Highly numerate
  • The ability to prioritise and multitask
  • The ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast paced environment
  • The ability to pick up new systems/processes with ease
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google docs, and Xero

Responsibilities are not limited to the above and can include additional duties as the business requires.
